Perinatal mental-health context: resources, not diagnosis

General information about perinatal mental health and where families can seek help; it does not diagnose anyone involved in this case.

Perinatal depression and other perinatal mood and anxiety conditions can occur during pregnancy or after childbirth. The National Institute of Mental Health describes symptoms and treatment options and encourages people experiencing symptoms to speak with a health professional.

General health information cannot determine what happened in an individual legal case. Diagnosis, causation, and criminal responsibility are clinical and legal questions addressed through qualified professionals and court processes.

For immediate danger or a suicide crisis in the United States, call or text 988 or call emergency services. Postpartum Support International and Massachusetts public-health resources offer non-emergency information, referrals, and support for parents, families, and clinicians.
